Reading outline

Hi all,
I am asking you all to do something a bit different. I feel that this is a very important skill to develop. I am asking you all to outline your reading assignment for today.

This is easy

I. Main Heading of the section (example: Vitamins)
A. First Main Topic (example: Fat soluble)
1. Ideas/definition
B. Second Main Topic

Email me you outlines in Word format. I know you are all very capable. I will make suggestions later on how to improve this skill in the future.

And as always, this is due by midnight.

Lastly, no daily quiz :)

Have a great weekend.

Hi all,
Next week, I will be away for 1 week for a workshop. Sister Marion will be sending you your assignments. You will be sending them to me as usual, as well as to Sister.
I will try to get to a computer to check my email.

Remember, YOU MUST COMPLETE ALL WORK BY MIDNIGHT!!!!!!

I have also stopped posting the Homework sheets on the blog, as I feel it is pretty redundant. If you need a copy, email me, and I will resend.

Take care.

Calculating Thermal Energy

On homework sheet #4, I asked you to calculate thermal energy, using the table on page 250. On page 252 there is a sample problem of this type:

How much thermal energy would be produced by burning 12.0 g of octane?

The table on page 250 says that burning 1 gram of octane would produce 47.8 KJ of energy (47.8 KJ/gram). SO 12 grams, would produce 12 times the energy, or 47.8 KJ times 12 which equals 574 KJ.

You do moles the same way, except you use The molar heat of combustion value.

Homework sheet #4

Hi all,

Apparently I made a mistake. those of you in semester 2 received the homework sheet #3 for semester 1, and the link below is wrong. So here is the corrected link to the correct sheet.

How do I determine the number of electon shells in an atom?

Remember the question on homework page #2: How many electrons are in the first shell: 2, how many electrons are in the 2nd, 3rd, etc... : 8.

Let's look at Copper. A Copper atom has a total of 29 electrons: 2 electrons in the first shell, 8 electrons in the 2nd shell, 8 electrons in the 3rd shell, 8 electrons in the 4th shell, and 3 electrons in the 5th shell. Therefore a Copper atom has a total of 5 electron shells.
